Fox40 is a Canadian whistle and water safety product manufacturer. Traditional whistle designs utilize a cork pea to create the trill sound when blown - the Fox40 whistle was designed without the pea to eliminate the possibility of the pea getting stuck and malfunctioning. This solid-state pealess design was first introduced to the sports world in 1987 at the Pan American Games. Since then, Fox40 has expanded it’s product line to include a variety of referee whistles, hiking safety whistles, personal safety whistles, and an awarding winning boat safety kit and water safety throw.
The Fox40 Caul is the official referee whistle for the NHL. While hockey players have enjoyed new lightweight and innovative equipment over the years, the design of hockey referees' whistles have changed very little. It is a side firing 2 chamber design with a sound that mimics the traditional pea whistle. The design eliminates the cold, knuckle-cutting metal finger band and replaces it with a comfortable, one-size-fits-all over-molded elastomer finger grip.
